Difficult Listening

July 11, 2009

Now here’s one that shaped my musical palette in a big way: Microstoria is a side project of Oval’s Markus Popp and Jan St. Werner of Mouse on Mars. Combining Oval’s fetish for CD scarification with MoM’s odd instrumentation and breezy, subtlely inchoate arrangements, Popp and St. Werner seem odd bedfellows at first, but the subtle parallels in compositional concern become clearer as the tracks roll on.

Japanese Minimalism

February 10, 2009

Kyoto born Rei Harakami studied film and initially wanted to pursue a career writing scores; however, a demo tape of his electronic material sent to the Sublime label garnered him the opportunity to remix Ken Ishii and, later, to release his own material ranging from danceable house tracks to spacy, minimalistic translations of Japanese melodies and rhythms into reflective electronics on the 1997 album ‘Unrest‘. Delicate & precise.

Transporter Swings

December 5, 2008

Came across this 1999 gem while nosing through my dusty tucked-away boxes of cd’s. Climbing a few rungs up the left-field ladder with these deep house musings from siblings Beni and Christoph Reimann on the now defunct but brilliant Source Records. Accomplished laptop vibraphonics, tinkling key work ensuring top-notch electronic jazz fusion.

The Weird And Wonderful World Of

November 26, 2008

Just finished watching ‘Wild Combination: A Portrait Of Arthur Russel‘, which compelled me to post something on this genius musician slash poet, and urge you all strongly to go see this essential documentary.
The tune here, released through one of his aliases Dinosaur L and taken from the 1981 album ‘24-24 Music‘ has such a spacy groove that it’s simply impossible to ignore if you are a fan of either Russell, strange space funk, sci-fi disco, shambolic jazz, and a good time.

Modern Minimalists

September 2, 2008

I came across this 1997 BBC documentary browsing through the always excellent Uncertain Times blog.
Presented by Björk with her typical eccentric english accent, this 2-part video hosts Alasdair Malloy, Mika Vainio, Tommi Grönlund and Arvo Pärt, most of ‘m artists who’ve extremely influenced me through the years.
